Summary
The role of Manufacturing Technician is a critical role in the Operations (Packing) environment. The Manufacturing Technican (Man Tech) is recognised as the owner of a packing line and the leader of a small team (typically 3 Operators but occasionally 4 including the Man Tech) within the operations environment. Man Techs need to have basic to good engineering knowledge to ensure maximum line efficiency with accountability and ownership to deliver the line Key Performance Indicators in their operational area.
Man Techs – Level 2 need to be time served\have formal apprentice training. This generally equates to being a Serviceperson of Class 1 Trade status
This is an operations focussed role, with a dotted line into the Engineering function – the key requirement of the Man Tech is to keep the line running efficiently and ensure quality product is packed ready for distribution; when the line is running efficiently the Man Tech’s time is likely to be spent 90% on operational tasks (operator duties) and 10% on engineering tasks.
Scope
• Operate lines to manufacture product in line with the plan, whilst providing technical support to ensure operational effectiveness
• Ensure Quality and Health and Safety Key Performance Indicator targets are consistently achieved as a minimum
• Ensure Customer service, Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE), Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and waste targets are exceeded by the line team
• Conduct, lead and deliver changeover activity with a focus on change over reduction
• Train, develop and assess the team to ensure flexibility is achieved within the team
• Conduct, lead and develop teams in troubleshooting, maintenance and Continuous Improvement (CI) activities
Responsibilities
• Operate lines at maximum efficiency to ensure all production plans are achieved on time and to quality standards
• Lead the hourly\daily\weekly performance reviews on the line ensuring corrective action is taken in a timely manner.
• Lead\Co-ordinate operators’ activities in operational area ensuring most effective use of skills available
• Ensure waste levels are minimised to achieve area targets
• Lead the team to ensure changeover activities are planned, resourced and continuously improved.
• Continually improve the performance of the team and equipment
• Ensure team members have the necessary skills to operate their area to the required standards.
• Actively influence the production planning process to optimise line performance
• Communicate with internal customers and support functions to ensure delivery of KPIs
• Define, plan and lead the Man Tech maintenance tasks making sure the line team fulfil their duties in respect of autonomous maintenance
• Lead\co-ordination of all breakdown engineering activities for the line
• Complete root cause analysis within scope of the role and technical expertise, with down time procedure identified and implement preventative solutions
• Support successful implementation of planned maintenance and new projects within scope of role
• Ensure maintenance\repair information is logged into Maximo (Computerised Maintenance Management System)
• Use escalation process for line stoppages or breakdowns in excess of 15 minutes or two consecutive hours of below target OEE
• Ensure legal and regulatory compliance in respect of safety and quality systems
• Take ownership for own training plan with support from Area Team Leader (Operations) and Maintenance Team Leader (Engineering)
• Ensure right first time completion of all line documentation including Change control, Q-Pulse and Maximo
Key Challenges
• Undertaking operator\production duties, whilst maintaining an engineering overview of the line
• Prioritise own tasks effectively to ensure delivery of all KPIs
• Passing knowledge on to team members whilst leading and operating within that team
• Remove non value added tasks to ensure maximum line efficiency and enable focus on improvement
• Influencing effectively to ensure support for improvement activities
• Performance related pay linked to key KPIs and core values being demonstrated
• Managing need to sometimes sacrifice line efficiency to ensure customer service is met
• Creating the opportunity to use improvement tools and Continuous Improvement tool box
• This is a technical role and in every activity, before tackling a problem, the Man Tech must carry out a mini risk assessment; this does not always have to be documented but the thought processes and risk assessment mind set needs to be there. If any risks are identified or at times of uncertainty then these must be flagged with the relevant Shift Technician or Maintenance Team Leader
